AI-Powered Role-Plays: What’s Working, What’s Not, and What’s Next

Role-plays have long been used to help learners practice important conversations, apply new skills, and build confidence before facing real-world situations. However, traditional role-plays can be difficult to facilitate consistently, may require significant time and resources, and are not always embraced by participants. Advances in artificial intelligence are creating new possibilities for making role-play practice more accessible, realistic, repeatable, and personalized.
AI-powered role-plays can allow learners to practice conversations with simulated customers, employees, managers, or other stakeholders in a psychologically safe environment. Depending on the technology, learners may receive immediate feedback, repeat a scenario multiple times, encounter different responses, and practice at their own pace. These tools also offer organizations the potential to provide more consistent practice opportunities across larger and geographically dispersed learner populations.
Despite the promise, many important questions remain. How realistic and useful are these experiences? What role should facilitators and managers continue to play? How should AI- generated feedback be used, and what safeguards are needed to address privacy, bias, accuracy, and learner acceptance? Organizations must also determine whether these tools are producing meaningful behavior change rather than simply creating an engaging technology experience.
During this interactive Round Table, participants will share how their organizations are currently exploring or using AI in role-plays, what they have learned, and where challenges remain. Together, we will examine practical applications, implementation considerations, lessons learned, and emerging best practices for using AI to create meaningful practice experiences that improve performance.
